Topic: As NADE’s Vice President, “Everything You Wanted to Know About NADE.” As the Director of Academic Success, “Redesigning Student Success: Helping Students Learn to Help Themselves.”
Marguerite MacDonald is the Director for the Office of Academic Success at Harrisburg Area Community College. She is responsible for the development, coordination, supervision, and evaluation of academic support services at the College. In a career that has spanned over twenty years in academic affairs and student services, she has served as a learning support services coordinator, counselor, developmental education advisor, grant writer, student success instructor, campus ombudsperson, and internship facilitator.
As a member of the National Association for Developmental Education (NADE) since 1993, she has served since 2011 as the Vice President of the NADE Executive Board. In addition, she served as the Committee Coordinator from 2009 to 2011, Elections Committee Chair from 2006 to 2009, and Co-Chaired the NADE 2006 Conference.
Marguerite has been a member of the Pennsylvania Association of Developmental Educators (PADE) since 1990 and was an active member of its Board of Directors from 1992 until 2005. She is also a Past-President of PADE. In 2002, she was the recipient of PADE’s Award for Outstanding Contribution to PADE. She also received PADE’s 2000 Award for Outstanding Developmental Program, and PADE’s 1997 Outstanding Service to Developmental Students Award.
Marguerite is a 1994 graduate of Leadership-Harrisburg Area and has served on the Board of Directors since 2010. In 2012, she was elected Secretary of the LHA Executive Committee. She also has served on the Board of Directors for Holy Spirit Hospital Health System’s Spirit Physicians Services since 2000 and as its Chair since 2009.

- Keeping Kids Connected in the Math Classroom (room 209): Tips, ideas, and resources for keeping the students engaged and on task during lessons. We will be using clickers, flipped classroom, pre-lesson assignments, and hands-on concrete materials. Presented by: Dee Cooper: Northern Oklahoma College
- Basic Composition Boot Camp (room 109): The session will discuss how the one week “Boot Camp” works. What skills were taught and reinforced will be discussed, and the overall pass rate. Presented by: Stacey Frazier: Northern Oklahoma College – Tonkawa
- Basic Science & Basic Reading Together? (room 108): The session will discuss the combination of basic science and basic reading class. The discussion will focus on what is working and what does not work, and how the class was organized. Presented by: Cathy Moore: Northern Oklahoma College – Tonkawaa
10:00 to 10:50AM – Breakout Sessions
- Accelerated Learning for Developmental-Writing Students: Benefits and Challenges (room 109): This presentation celebrates the benefits and explores the challenges of the heralded Accelerated Learning Program (ALP) for developmental writing. ALP offers developmental writing and Comp I in the same semester as corequisites. A basic introduction to ALP, honest discussion about its administration, an exploration of advantages and drawbacks, and the latest reports on how ALP is working locally and nationally. Presented by: David Charlson: Tulsa Community College
- Accelerated Developmental Math Classes (room 108): The sessions will present how students are allowed to complete two remedial math courses in one semester. Discussions on what works and what doesn’t work. Presented by: Cassandra Firth: Northern Oklahoma College – Stillwater
- Reading Placement Retest (room 209): Two colleges, Tulsa Community College and Arkansas State University in Beebe, recognize placement issues for students enrolled in reading courses. This presentation offers a successful intervention. During the first week of the semester, both colleges prepare students to retake the placement test by a power point of concepts covered in the reading course. Then the entire class is retested. Presented by: Ginny Davis, Kathy Daily, Kayla Harding, Vickie Robinson: Tulsa Community College
- Kellogg Institute: National Center for Developmental Education (room 108): The nationally recognized Kellogg Institute was established in 1980 to train and certify developmental educators and learning skills specialists. The Institute provides and intensive summer training program which features four seminars on the topics of assessment and placement, designing learning environments, academic support systems, and outcomes assessment and program evaluation. The Institute is an advanced professional development program intended to assist practitioners in expanding their knowledge of the field and improving their own developmental or learning assistance program. This session will present information about the institute and provide funding suggestions for participants. Presented by: Anne A Fisher: Tulsa Community College
- Why You Need Them and How to Get Them on a Regular Basis (room 209): When a teacher provides an environment where students can create social bonds and build a community with shared language and shared knowledge, teachers pave the way for retention and active class participation through discussion within the community of their classroom. Student participation in class discussions can become the “norm” and not the rare occurrence. The workshop will be used as a time to practice, as a group, actual techniques based on learning theories, techniques that stimulate and sustain discussion.
